Why Would My Facility Be Inspected?

I’m doing everything right, I follow all the rules and regulations, I’m a stickler for record keeping, the DEA will never come here right?

You don’t necessarily need to be in the wrong for the DEA to show up at your facility for an inspection. Below are just a few reasons that knock may happen, and you will want to be prepared.

Follow up on a recent DEA Registration application

A random compliance check, ensuring that you are in compliance with the CSA

They have received a tip regarding illegal activity at the facility

Filing of a DEA form 106 indicating that a theft or loss has occurred

Your facility operates on a cash only basis

Your facility is open during unusual hours

The office does not appear from the outside as a “typical” medical practice

There is a high number of family members in a pain management practice

An increase on controlled substance purchases through your vendors

Unusually high number of patients being seen

The best way to ensure your facility is ready for an audit or inspection is to be prepared! Make sure all of your required documentation is complete and ready, ensure your log books are accurate, your controlled substances are secured, your registration is current and has the correct address listed, have a 3rd party come in and evaluate your readiness state so that you can take preventative measures to correct and deficiencies before they become a fine.
